Charcot-Marie-Tooth: Happy Father’s Day

(C) 2026, Isaiah Jacobs

Happy Father’s Day! I hope you celebrate the day in a grand fashion. Fathers are an important part of life, despite what you might hear from the media and all the naysayers. Fathers have skills to raise their children that mothers do not have, and the same is true for mothers who have skills fathers do not. So spend time loving your father like you never have before.

To mention a few of the fathers’ skills would take more space and time than I have here. But here are a few memories: I can remember my father teaching me about car maintenance, checking the oil and having it changed regularly, checking the tires, and the importance of the requirement for state inspections. I would like to say that I followed his advice and maintained my cars perfectly, but that wouldn’t be true. But, I came closer than I would have if he hadn’t taught me.

Dad taught me to respect my mother and other women. As a boy, I wasn’t allowed to be disrespectful to my mother. I slipped one time and got a lecture. I remember being thankful I didn’t get a spanking. He taught me to respect girls that I dated, too. He emphasized the respect of not having sex on dates, to always open doors, carry packages, walk on the side next to the road, and the list could go on and on. This advice served me well over the years and eventually helped me to find the girl I married.

One more skill. Dad was a pretty good handyman. He did his best to teach me the skills I would need to maintain my home. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do many of them and have had to have help over the years. He gets praises for his diligent efforts. I remember one repair where he was teaching me about repairing a toilet. Nearly the end of the work, my cat wandered into the bathroom, making the horrifying noise he’d make when he had a hairball. Well, Dad had never heard that noise before; he’d not been around cats, and gave me this frightened look. I don’t think I had ever seen my dad start packing up his tools so fast, trying to leave as he was “out of there!” I still laugh at that.

The list could go on and on, but, as I mentioned, it would be way too many pages!

I hope you have an awesome Father’s Day with your father.
